Even though menopause transition is a normal phase for most, it is complex and influenced by many factors. It can be difficult for any of us, including health care professionals, to understand the cause of some of the physical, mental and emotional symptoms that can occur.
Like puberty, no menopause experience is the same. We need to understand the term symptoms is used to recognise that even though menopause transition is not an illness or medical condition, some will have a negative experience that significantly impacts day to day life.
Perimenopause phase (when hormones first fluctuate) can begin around the age of 40, wreaking havoc for some who may experience hot flushes, memory or concentration issues, feelings of being overwhelmed, anxiety, low mood, quick to temper, skin or hair changes, urine leakage or infections and loss of wellbeing and libido. The list goes on...
Symptoms of oestrogen decline can also be severe when experienced prematurely (under 40 years of age); after certain treatments for example breast cancer or due to a surgical induced menopause following a hysterectomy. This abrupt stopping of hormones , instead of a gradual decline, can be produce intense symptoms to manage.
The lack of openness around how these symptoms affect us can cause misunderstanding and a perceived lack of support from colleagues, partners, friends and other family members. This can contribute to feelings of isolation and helplessness.
If you are struggling with any symptoms and need help then menopause management is designed for you. You will receive a session tailored to your unique experience and leave with strategies and options to get you back on track.
